Kufra Airport – AKF Airport
Kufra Airport is located in the Kufra District of southeastern Libya, specifically east of the city. It serves the capital of Kufra District, Al Jawf. The non-directional beacon and the VOR-DME of Kufra are located on the airfield of Kufra Airport. Air Libya and Libyan Airlines serve the passengers at AKF Airport.
Best Time to Visit
AKF Airport is a public airport operated by the Civil Aviation and Meteorology Bureau. It stands on an elevation of 1,367 feet and has two runways. Runway 02L/20R has a length of 3,660 meters and has an asphalted surface. Runway 02R/20L is closed and no longer in operation. The history of Kufra Airport started way in back the 1930s on what was then Buma Airfield. Air Libya operates twice weekly with a Benghazi-Kufra-Khartum service. Libyan Airlines recently relaunched their Benghazi service in July of 2013. Upgrading of the runways and taxiways of the Kufra Airport is currently underway and estimated to be completed in 20 months. The Salini Construttori, an Italian company, is doing the construction.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Travelers to Al Jawf or other towns in the Kufra Districts will not find a hotel in the area. However, there are a variety of hotels in Benghazi, an hour and 30 minutes away from Kufra via air travel. Air Libya takes passengers from Kufra to Benghazi on twice weekly schedule. Tibesti Hotel is located in the city center of Benghazi offers opulent accommodations complete with a huge indoor pool. Al Fadil Hotel offers well-equipped rooms and offers views of the harbor.
