Hida: Home of Fine Authentic Sake
Hida, Japan is the northernmost city in Gifu. The modern city was formed in 2004. This wonderful city thrives on two main, traditional economies, the Japanese candle production, and sake production.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit Hida is from April through July, for the perfect weather. The busiest months are usually March, May, and October. Tourists are least likely to visit in July. One of the most exciting events in the area is Furukawa Matsuri, which is held every April. The main highlight of the event is Okoshi Daiko, where half-naked men clash against drums. The festival also features a Yatai float procession. Another nearby event to look forward to is the Spring Takayama Festival or Sanno Festival in Takayama, which is held every April. Centered on the Hie Shrine or Sanno Shrine, it is intended to pray for an abundant harvest.
What to Do & Area Attractions
One of the must-see attractions in the area is Keta Wakamiya Shrine or Sugimoto-sama, a Shinto shrine believed to have been built during the Heian period. The main gods worshipped at the shrine are Kinomata-no-kami or Okuninushi. Amaterasu is also honored at the shrine. Another must-see attraction in the area is Shirakawa-go Historic Villages and Gokayama. These are declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites, particularly for the three historic mountain villages onsite, Ainokura, Ogimachi, and Suganuma. All these villages come with complex fire-extinguishing systems to endure preservation. Also, visit the Community Well in nearby Chubu.
