The Hollywood Sign, or formerly known as the Hollywoodland Sign, is an American milestone and social symbol that overlooks Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. It is perched on top of Mount Lee of the Mountains of Santa Monica. The word "HOLLYWOOD" is illuminated in 14-meter tall white uppercase letters and measures 110 meters long. The sign was initially made in 1923 as a transitory ad for nearby land improvement, yet because of expanding acknowledgment, the sign was left up. The sign shows up in mainstream society, especially in building up shots for movies and TV programs set in or around Hollywood.
