Jeonju: An Immersion in Asian Culture and Heritage
Jeonju, Korea, is the bustling capital of North Jeolla Province and happens to be the birthplace of the much-loved Korean rice bowl called bibimbap. Jeonju, Korea welcomes travelers all year round, but most flock to the city in January, May, and April, which happens to be the city's least humid month. Expect the least amount of precipitation in January, February, and October, during which the Jeonju Bibimbap Festival is held. Also don't miss out on the Jeonju International Film Festival and Jeonju Crafts Exhibition Festival in May, as well as other cultural events such as the Jeonju Cultural Heritage Night Tour. The Jeonju International Sori Festival, which is often held between August to October, is the country's premier event celebrating traditional music.
What to Do & Area Attractions
While in Jeonju, Korea, visit the Chimyeongjasan Holy Land, which features a towering cross, several statues, and markers. This pilgrimage site draws tourists as Jeonju is known as the birthplace of the Catholic Church in Korea. Visit the Gyeonggijeon Shrine, built in 1410 and home to relics from the Joseon Dynasty. The Gangam Calligraphy Museum offers collections from the 20th-century calligrapher, Song Sung-yong.
