It is located within the Aleutians East Borough, and it sits in an elevation of 133 feet above level in a small island known as Akun Ilsand. The Essential Air Service program of the Alaska Department of Transportation & Public Service subsidizes the scheduled air services offered by the airport. The KQA-Akutan Airport first opened in 2012, and was served by PenAir, the only operator that shuttled back and forth to Akutan SeaPlane Base. When it retired in 2012, the government built a traditional airport to serve the island.
