L’Aquila, Italy: A City of Remarkable Bravery and Courage
Home to the University of L’Aquila, L’Aquila is a lively town surrounded by the Apennine Mountains. The city gained recognition when it was hit by a 6.3 magnitude earthquake, causing some of its historic monuments to crumble in 2008 and significantly affecting its tourism activities. Two local festivities also take place during this month, the Francavilla a Mare, carnival festivities and the Citta Sant’ Angeo, a carnival parade of colorful floats. Another unique event that takes place in the area is the International L’Aquila Tango Marathon, which features 32 hours of dancing. This event is usually held in June.
