Murtala Muhammed International Airport – LOS
The Murtala Muhammed International Airport is an international airport in the state of Lagos, Nigeria. It is located in Ikeja, the capital of the State of Lagos, Nigeria and serves the whole state. The Murtala Muhammed International Airport, whose airport code is LOS, dates back World War II as an initially built airport. Its name was taken from the fourth ruler of Nigeria Murtala Rufai Ramat Muhammed who was assassinated in 1976. But before that it was named Lagos International Airport. It was onlyin 1970 when the airport was renamed to its present name during the construction of the new terminal.
Best Time to Visit
The LOS-Murtala Muhammed International Airport’s new terminal was officially opened in 1979 and became home to the largest airline of Nigeria, Arik Air. Criminal activities and custom staff and immigration officers’corruptions during late 1980 and 1990 stained the reputation of the airport. In 1993, the US Federal Aviation Administration posted warning to all international airports in the U.S. that Murtala Muhammed Airport is not qualifier with ICAO minimum standard. Nigeria government intensified the campaign against criminalities in the airport. Finally in 2010, FAA lifted its warning advisory. As of 2017, the airport accommodates 6,367,478 passengers. You can easily drive to the tourists' sites of Ikorodu and Lagos Island from the airport.
