Mapusa: A Splash of Color in Goa, India
Mapusa is a small town built around Mt. Alto. Bustling with activity, Mapusa is a stimulating change from the usual beach destinations Northern Goa offers. It serves as a commercial hub for many Indian locals who travel weekly to hawk their wares every Friday, making the Mapusa Municipal market area explode with color and noise. Mapusa, India is also known for its street food, drawing in crowds in a way none of the Northern Goa beaches can.
Best Time to Visit
Weather-wise, the best time for a visit to Mapusa is from months of October to April. Months from December to January are tourist season. Mapusa hotels and accommodations can be scant, so book your lodging in advance. Don’t miss the Carnival in February (just before the Lenten season).
What to Do & Area Attractions
If you are just passing by on your trip to one of the amazingly breathtaking Northern Goa beaches, make sure it’s on a Friday. There is nothing like the Mapusa Friday Bazaar, which springs to life every week with various items – fish, produce, spices, fabrics and everything in between – from many neighboring towns and villages. Another notable place in Mapusa is St. Xavier’s College, a prominent educational institution and the largest and oldest in Goa. Rest and recharge at Hotel Shraddha, which offers comfortable rooms and meals that locals very heartily approve of. You can also book your stay at the Hill Top Luxury Villa, which features an infinity pool, or at Prestige Hotel, which offers airport shuttle for a fee.
