McAlester: A City to Unwind and Appreciate the Nature With
The “Capital of Little Dixie”, McAlester, OK is a city within and the municipality seat of Pittsburg County. James Jackson McAlester was the first to settle here, opening a general store following a discovery of coal deposits. The construction of railroads followed and has managed to make the settlement grow into a town, until it became what it is known today as a city. One of the historic landmarks you can find here is the OKLA Theatre which was destroyed by fire during the 1930s, rebuilt in 1931. After being sold to United Artist Theatres in 1989, it has since been raising fund for its renovation to Community Arts Center. The Italian Festival is a 2-day event held during the month of May where food, entertainment and a whole lot more can be experienced by tourists.
