The Oakland International Airport is located 10 minutes from downtown Oakland, California. It is also just across from San Francisco, on the other side of the bay. Serving the Bay Area, it is owned and operated by the Port of Oakland. It serves as the local hub for FedEx Express and it is also the focus city for airlines Allegiant Air and Southwest Airlines. In 2018, an estimated 13.5 million people traveled through, making it one of the busiest airports in California. It is also Southwest Airline’s largest operation in the state. Oakland International Airport’s code is OAK-Oakland International. It was built in the 1920s and was dedicated by Charles Lindbergh. In the 1940s, it was temporarily operated by the U.S. Armed Forces and was transformed into an airlift base. In 2010, construction on a new control tower began. It was completed in 2013. A $300 Million terminal improvement program was completed in 2008. Expansion was also started in 2015. OAK covers an area of 2,600 acres and has four runways. It has two passenger terminals T1 and T2. Both are connected at the post-security and gate areas, making it easier for passengers on connecting flights.
