Falcone Borsellino Airport – PMO Palermo, Italy
Formerly known as Punta Raisi Airport, the Falcone Borsellino Airport managed to retain its airport code of PMO. The name change was in recognition of two anti-mafia judges named Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino, the two having been murdered by the Sicilian Mafia right on the same airport. This Palermo, Italy airport currently operates as the second largest when it comes to passenger accommodation, managing to handle as much as 5.3 million people in 2016.
Best Time to Visit
This government-operated airport is served by the Punta Raisi Railway Station which runs every 30 minutes until 10 in the evening. There are also several buses operating outside the terminal with connections to cities like Catania and Messina. Bearing in mind the tragic event that happened in the area, the facility is currently home to a 1.90metre plaque portraying the slain judges set against a Sicily mosaic.
