The history of RDD-Redding Municipal Airport goes way back to World War II (WWII). In 1942, the US Army Corps of Engineers for the US Army Air Forces acquired the site of the airfield. It was used as a sub-base for Chico Army AirField. Primarily, it served as a hub for advanced flight training for prior to the deployment of airmen. A few years later, the main purpose of the airfield changed into maintenance and refueling. The military ownership of the airfield ended in 1949. Currently, the local government of Redding is still operating the airport. The airport operates on a 1,584-acre land with two (2) runways. These measure 7,003-foot long and 5,067-foot long, respectively. The terminal building’s expansion from 20,000 sq. ft. to roughly 30,000 sq. ft. was completed in 2014, funded mostly by the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) Airport Improvement Program. Upon completion, the holding capacity increased from 70 passengers to more than 200 passengers. Interesting cities nearby include Cottonwood, Douglas City, and Shasta Lake.
