Ruiru: A Busy Residential Town with Wildlife Preservation in Mind
The town of Ruiru is located in Kiambu County, less than two miles away from Nairobi, the capital of Kenya. Ruiru, Kenya, was once known as an affluent coffee growing area before its natural coffee estates were used for residential housing. An airport near Ruiru is Wilson Airport (WIL).

The best periods to visit Ruiru, Kenya is either from late February to late May or from July to December. These months see varied weather, ranging from some of the hottest temperatures of the year to some of the lowest. December is also ideal as it sees the least tourist activity, leaving the already densely populated Ruiru less crowded. Another reason to visit in December is to catch the annual PAWA Festival, hailed as Kenya’s Mardi Gras.

The Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage works to rescue orphan elephants and rehabilitate injured or sick ones. It was founded in 1977 and continues to work to protect Kenya’s most valuable elephant orphans. Another place to see some of Kenya’s preserved animal inhabitants is at the AFEW Giraffe Centre. The African Fund for Endangered Wildlife seeks to protect and help the endangered giraffe continue to breed. It also allows guests to feed some of its giraffes.
