The perfect time to visit Altenberg is during the months of May through September, for the best weather. Peak tourist season is usually during the months of January, August, and October. Tourists are least likely to visit in December. One of the most anticipated events in the area is Bachfest, a 10-day event held every late May or early June in Leipzig. It celebrates music in honor of Johan Sebastian Bach. Another nearby event to look forward to is Internationales Dixieland Festival, a celebration of jazz music. It is held for a week every May.

Construction initially finished in 1983, but most of the trials were unsuccessful. It was officially completed 3 years later. Another must-see tourist attraction in town is Botanischer Garten Schellerhau, a botanical garden built by Gustav Adolf Poscharsky in 1906 as his private garden. Today, it cultivates roughly 1,000 species, focusing on endangered local species. Collections include alders, bell flowers, dwarf pines, heather, and primroses.
