Locally known as Amakusa Airport, Amakusa Airfield is a public airport serving the city of Amakusa, Japan. The airport is strategically situated at 2.6 miles northwest of the city and is currently owned and managed by the Kumamoto Prefecture government. Best Time to Visit
The construction of Amakusa Airfield took place in 1992. But it wasn't until year 2000 when the airfield was open for public use. The first scheduled trip was between the cities to Kumamoto, with twice a day flight schedules. In 2005, the operating hours of the airport were extended from 0800 hours until 1900 hours to 0740 hours until 2030 hours. With these changes, there are now three roundtrips between the airport to Fukuoka and one roundtrip to Kumamoto. As of 2014, the airport had catered around 62,000 passengers. Travelers that wish to take head-off to Unzen upon arriving at the airport may do so through the local transportation booths.
What to Do & Area Attractions
Upon arriving at the airport, travelers need not worry about hotel accommodation. They can check-in at Hotel Sun Road, which features low-key rooms but with scenic views of Jumanyama Park or at Hotel Alegria Gardens Amakusa, which features minimalist rooms that overlook Shimabara Bay. These hotels are popular among tourists as they offer unique lodgings. Also, both hotels are less than 15-minutes away from the airport.
