Castrovillari: A Vibrant Community of History and Festivity
The municipality of Castrovillari, Italy was named from the medieval Latin term “castrum villarum,” which translates to “fortress of the villas.” There have been settlements in the city since the prehistoric times and was believed to be founded during the wars of the Byzantine Empire against the Lombards. Locals traveling to Castrovillari used to go by train but it was abandoned in 1978. Nonetheless, numerous hotels and lodging spaces still dot the city.
