Ercolano: A Town Where History is Reborn
Ercolano is a municipality located in Naples in southern Italy, which lies at the foot of Mount Vesuvius. Previously, the town went by the name of Resina, which stood where the ancient city of Herculaneum was before it was destroyed in the Vesuvius eruption. It was not until 1969, that its name was officially changed to Ercolano, an Italianized version of “Herculaneum.” Ercolano can be accessed through two airports: Naples International Airport, at 20 minutes away, and Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport, at nearly an hour away.
Best Time to Visit
As Ercolano, Italy is a popular tourist destination for those who want to visit the ruins of Herculaneum and Pompeii, the best time to visit would be during off-season, from months of November to March. The city can get incredibly crowded, and this can make it exceedingly difficult to take the sites in. July brings the summer of Music Festival in Sorrento, an hour from Ercolano.
What to Do & Area Attractions
A great venue for taking in the culture of Naples is the Teatro di San Carlo, the oldest active opera house in the world that has hosted some of the world’s greatest musical composers. Literature enthusiasts will be eager to see Virgil’s Tomb, a towering Roman burial vault said to house the remains of the legendary poet. The structure is also believed to have sacred mystical properties, making it an object of worship. An Ercolano hotel is the Miglio d’Oro Park Hotel, with an elegantly designed outer façade. Another is the Hotel Herculaneum, with comfortable and clean rooms and relaxing verandas for lounging.
