Labin: Heritage Highlight of Eastern Istria
Labin, Croatia, formerly known as Albona, this old town is situated on a hilltop above Rabac. It is a picturesque town in Istria, Croatia that is divided into two parts: the old town and the new town. Old Town is mainly the historical part of Labin while the rural part where most shops and services can be found is the New Town. Labin is very interesting as it is rich in history, they have a famous coal mining story and the medieval history of Istrian Hilltop. In the old days, Labin was known as the mining capital of Istria until 1970’s, it was mined extensively and excessively, which caused the town to collapse. Due to this disaster, mining was totally stopped in 1999 and rampant repairs were undertaken to restore the town.
Best Time to Visit
The best months to visit Labin is from months of July to August since the average temperatures vary greatly, the area is warmest during the said months. December should be avoided if you are not a big fan of rain. If you prefer milder weather and few tourists, visit them on autumn, which is from months of May, June and September.

Labin is near the coast but there’s no beach there, luckily it is only 5 km away via Rabac Ferry Port from the busy tourist resort Rabac Beach. The cultural heritage of Labin is evident by the number of art ateliers that displays a mixture of Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque architecture in a several of Venetian palaces and churches.
