Miyoshi: Hiroshima’s Cultural District
Miyoshi is a Japanese city most popularly known for its 450-year-old local tradition of using cormorants to fish. Additionally, it is also the art and culinary center of the Hiroshima Prefecture. In 2004, the rearrangement was made in the prefecture and the scope of Miyoshi was extended to include other villages from the Konu and Futami districts.
Best Time to Visit
Many people go to Miyoshi from June to September because it is the season for fishing. This time provides an opportunity for tourists to witness the awesome skills of local fishermen in using cormorants. Another reason for crowded Miyoshi hotels during these months are two other important festivals. The Miyoshi Kinsai Festival, which happens every July is celebrated on the streets of the city with traditional drum dancing. Meanwhile, August signals the celebration of the Miyoshi City Fireworks Festival, which features 10,000 fireworks lighting up the sky.

Aside from its fishing attractions, Miyoshi is home to the Okuda Genso Sayume Art Museum, which contains the artworks of the Okuda couple from the Showa period. Tourists are also welcome to drop by the Hiroshima Miyoshi Winery to see how the local alcoholic drinks are made.
