Serving the capital of Tunisia, Tunis-Carthage International Airport is a public/military type of airport located in Tunis, Tunisia. Its name was derived from the historic city of Carthage, which can be found just 15 minutes away from the east of the airport. The airfield, whose airport code is TUN, opened to the public in 1938, when it handled about 6,000 passengers on its flights to Paris. In the World War II era, the airfield served as a headquarters and command control base of the United States Air Force Twelfth Air Force.
Best Time to Visit
TUN-Tunis-Carthage International Airport’s construction started in 1944 before Tunisair made it its central hub in 1948. Three years later, the passenger traffic of the airport steadily increased as it was also a convenient stop-over point for French airlines traveling mostly from Paris to Brazzaville and Saigon. So to accommodate the growing demand, the terminal was expanded to more than 57,000 square meters in 1997 and was developed again in 2005. It now has a total capacity of almost five million passengers annually. From the airport, you can reach the towns of La Marsa, Rades, and Megrine. This international airport is also the home base of several airlines, including Tunisair, Nouvelair Tunisia, Tunisair Express, and Tunisavia.
