Wismar: A Historic Coastal Town of Architecture and Heritage
Nestled along the coast of the Baltic Sea, Wismar, Germany is a port city with over 42,000 residents. It serves as the capital of the Nordwestmecklenburg district and one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the region. Wismar’s origin date as far back as the 12th century, during which the town belonged to Sweden. While Germany claimed the city in 1871, the Swedish government only officially turned it over in 1903.

Boat enthusiasts will surely enjoy spending a week in Wismar, especially during the Wismar Harbour Festival held every June. The previous editions of the festival featured great tall ships and sailing competitions for the whole family to enjoy. The summer season is just beginning by this time of year, so expect the influx of tourists and the price rising of most of Wismar hotels.
What to Do & Area Attractions
There are plenty of sites to see both in and out of Wismar. When planning out your itinerary, make sure to include a visit to the University of Wismar, and the Willsmer Market Square.
