The airport facility was built in 1926 by Aeronautica Militare which is the military air force of Italy. A flight training center was established for 10 years. The first hangar of the airforce was designed by Pier Luigi Nervi. A meteorological service center was established before the war. The airfield also became a parachuting school. In 1987, a new control tower was built. In 2007, the airport was developed into a large scale civil airport. There are 4 check-in desks, boarding areas, and waiting rooms installed. Ercolano and Frattamaggiore are two cities surrounding the airport.
